Hiking the Trails: Appalachia and Renogy Camping Gear

The Appalachian Mountains are full of wildlife, trails, and avid hikers. At the same time, they are also full of challenge and even mystery to those unfamiliar with the dense forest and winding trails. You may have heard certain folks refer to the Appalachian Mountains by their smaller subdivisions, possibly the “Great Smokies” or “Blueridge Mountains.” Make no mistake; both of these smaller subdivisions make up a small part of the vast expanse of geological magnificence known as the Appalachian Mountains. Traveled by many but fully completed by few, the Appalachian Mountain trail is a popular destination for hikers and campers around the world.

Perhaps it would be proper to give a brief explanation about the natural science surrounding the formation of this mountain range before going into details about the trail. The earth is estimated to be about 4.5 billion years old and the rocks in the core of the Appalachian Mountains are estimated to be about 1 billion years old. The area that would eventually become the Appalachian Mountains was formerly part of a supercontinent that began pulling apart about 750 million years ago. When the supercontinent began pulling apart, a deep basin formed, filling up with sediment from seawater and rivers. As the sediment accumulated and later formed into rocks, weathering and river movement forged the mountains that we see today.

Besides being JUST a beautiful mountain range, the Appalachians also have a very famous hiking trail. First opened in 1923, this trail runs through 14 eastern US states. The trail extends from Springer Mountain in Georgia, to Mount Katahdin in Maine. Altogether, there are about 2,180 miles of trail that are protected by state, federal, and local law. Various conservation groups and other non-profits also maintain the trails. While many have attempted to hike the great trail, only about 15,000 brave souls have made it from start to finish. An entire hike of the trail typically takes about 6 months, putting great physical and mental strain on those brave enough to take the challenge.

While hiking, it is important to pack light. It is important to take everything necessary to maintain a safe and healthy lifestyle, while cutting items that are unnecessary. For example, non-perishable food items, lightweight cooking gear, a flashlight, first aide, sunscreen, and fire starters are necessities. A lighter pack means less strain on the back, legs, and feet.
